Too often, individuals with complex needs, including those with mental health diagnoses, and co-occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities, or high-risk, externalizing behaviors, encounter fragmented systems of care that are not equipped to provide comprehensive, person-centered support. In 2020, The Edinburg Center developed the Better Together model in response to these gaps in service delivery. Rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, Better Together infuses clinical mental health services with the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Additional resources available within some programs using the Better Together model include Occupational Therapy (OT) and Peer Services. The Better Together model embodies The Edinburg Center’s values: to foster an environment where every individual can live their life to the fullest, with dignity and respect.
Better Together shows promising outcomes and reflects what is possible when different disciplines and systems work in partnership:
- 91% of participants partially or fully met their treatment goals
- Fewer than 4% of participants were discharged to higher levels of care
This white paper offers an in-depth look at the Better Together model, its structure, and its outcomes–providing a roadmap for integrated, person-centered, community-based care that is responsive to the ongoing needs of individuals and families.
