The Edinburg Center’s Community Based Flexible Supports Program Opens a New 6-Person Highly Structured Residential Program on Hull Street in Belmont

The Edinburg Center’s Community Based Flexible Supports Program recently opened a highly structured residential program on Hull Street in Belmont. This program provides specialized medical and behavioral services for six men who were discharged from Westborough State Hospital. This residential program is housed in two apartments on two floors of a 3-family structure, located between Waverly and Cushing Squares in Belmont.

This new program will be staffed 24 hours each day and will work with each person to design a schedule that works for him. Some individuals might choose to join a clubhouse, while others might benefit from The Center’s Transitions Day Treatment Program at our 1040 Waltham Street site in Lexington. We expect that most, if not all, of the men will need, at least part of the week, highly individualized day structures provided within the residential program that combine rehabilitative activities, health and wellness activities, and recreational and social activities.

In order to meet the medical needs of each individual of this program, staffing includes a part-time Registered Nurse, a full time Licensed Practical Nurse and Certified Nursing Assistants. These professionals ensure that each person is receiving optimal medical care and that medical care plans are implemented in a consistent manner.

The Hull Street program also employs Recovery Counselors to act as advocates, to implement Individualized Action Plans, to offer recreational activities, to assist with linkages to the community and provide support and counseling.

So far everyone have been very pleased with their new home. Each person has his own bedroom. One man stated that the Hull Street residence was "like a palace!" and another 50 year old man said that he "never slept in a bed as big as this my entire life."

Ellen Attaliades, CEO for The Edinburg Center stated that “opening a new program takes a tremendous amount of dedication and energy. I want to recognize and thank Holly Baab, Vicki Fredrickson, Barbara Waldorf, Elaine Farash, Judith Kellam, Danielle Parvez, Mark Larsen, Bill Riley, Randy Brown, Helen Wong and the many staff that contributed to the opening of Hull Street.”

At a recent meeting with the Department of Mental Health, The Edinburg Center was recognized for our efforts in expediently opening Hull Street and assisting in the process to close Westborough State Hospital.
